New Senior Group to launch NCR channel today; plans national channel by yearend

The NCR channel, S1, is finally being launched today. The 24-hour Hindi news channel has been promoted by Delhi-based Senior Group which has interests in the real estate business. Recently the group forayed into the media domain with the launch of a Hindi news magazine.

Senior Group had announced its plans for an NCR channel last year, the first to do so. While it kept deferring its plans, two other NCR-centric channels -- Total TV and Sahara Samay NCR -- went on air. In fact, Sahara launched its NCR channel only last month.

Senior Group chairman and S1 CEO, Vijay Dixit, told exchange4media that the channel which is being launched at an investment of Rs 50 crore, will provide extensive news coverage of Delhi and NCR, with a rich dose of film and entertainment news. For this purpose a special bureau has been set up in Mumbai. "Unlike other news channels which give two repeats of 8 hours of news, we will give 12 hours of original news with only one repeat in 24 hours,” he said.

The channel, Dixit said, has set up five studios in Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Sonepat which are linked to the main studio in South Delhi's Siri Fort area through leased lines. The channel has put into service four DSNG vans for extensive live coverage.

As a run-up to its plans for launching a national Hindi news channel, S1 will be giving news coverage from the Hindi belt states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab. The channel has a team of 110 reporters and stringers to cover these areas in addition to Delhi and NCR.

Senior Group proposes to launch its national Hindi news channel by the end of the year at an estimated investment of Rs 110 crore.
