MCCS begins work on proposed Marathi news channel

Media Content Communication Services (MCCS), a JV between the ABP Group and STAR Hong Kong, is all geared to add another channel to its offering. Where the entity owns STAR News as the flagship channel and added STAR Ananda in 2005, the year 2007 will see the launch of a Marathi news channel from the group.

As of now, neither the name of the channel nor the date of launch has been decided on. However, MCCS sources revealed that the target launch was in the second half of 2007.

Uday Shankar, CEO, STAR News and STAR Ananda, would be in-charge of the new channel, while Milind Khandekar has been identified from within the organisation to supervise the launch of the Marathi news channel. Khandekar, who works very closely with Shankar in the present state of affairs at MCCS, would be looking after the business and operational details of the Marathi news channel. Chandramohan Puppala, who is currently the Editor, West, for STAR News, would also be involved with the channel.

On being contacted, Shankar refused to divulge any details on the Marathi news channel. Nonetheless, exchange4media readers would recall that in a previous interview, Shankar had revealed that next on the MCCS drawing board was a Marathi channel and then a Gujarati news channel, given MCCS’ view on the strength of regional markets and the growth thereof.
