Kancil Awards 2005: McCann-Erickson, The Sun, Ham win laurels

The Kancil Awards, acknowledged as Malaysia's largest and most prestigious advertising awards competition, were held in Kuala Lumpur on November 18. McCann-Erickson (M) Sdn Bhd walked away with the Golden Kancil Award or Advertisement of The Year Award this year for its Sony Playstation 2 'Maze' advertisement under the poster category.

In all, McCann-Erickson bagged two gold (for the Sony Playstation 2 'Maze' advertisement), eight silver and 15 bronze medals.

Another agency winning the laurels was Naga DDB Sdn Bhd, which bagged 15 awards in all and was named Agency of the Year. This award is given to the most deserving Malaysian agency based on its performance at D&AD, Cannes, The One Show, Clio, The Kancil Award as well as other regional advertising awards.

Naga DDB's advertisement for Nikon Malaysia had won the prestigious D&AD Yellow Pencil Award for non-English category in June this year, the first local advertising group to bring the award home.

The Sun newspaper was named Media Partner of the Year for providing the most innovative and creative execution avenues for agencies and advertisers. The award was one of the five new special awards introduced at this year's Kancil Awards for industry partners in recognition of their support in the industry.

Other notable winners at the Kancil Awards this year included Leo Burnett Advertising Sdn Bhd, which won 24 awards (13 silvers, 11 bronzes); Naga DDB, 15 awards (one gold, five silvers and nine bronzes); Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Sdn Bhd, 14 awards (two golds, six silvers, six bronzes); and Young & Rubicam Sdn Bhd seven awards (one gold, two silvers, four bronzes).

The Advertiser of the Year went to UMW Toyota Motors Sdn Bhd, while Harmandar Singh (popularly known as Ham), a person of Indian origin, an industry veteran and the CEO of Sledgehammer Communications, got the Special Chairman's Award. This award was introduced this year to acknowledge the contribution of an individual towards significantly raising the level of creative advertising excellence.

The Kancil Awards is an annual event organized by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As) to honour creativity in advertising produced by member agencies for a calendar year.

Set up in 1978, the Awards were then called the '6As'. In 1995, this annual event was re-named the Kancil Awards, to recognise home-grown Malaysian creative excellence in advertising.
