IRS R1 2009: Lokmat leads among language dailies; Saras Salil, India Today top magazines

According to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) Round 1 2009 data released by the Media Research Users’ Council (MRUC), there is a neck and neck fight between the top two language dailies for the first position. While Marathi daily Lokmat leads with a total readership (TR) of 20,648,000, it is closely followed by Tamil daily Daily Thanthi with TR of 20,456,000.

Among the top 10 language dailies, Tamil daily Dinakaran secures the third position with a TR of 16,633,000, followed by Bengali daily Ananda Bazar Patrika at fourth place with TR of 15,514,000. Telugu daily Eenadu is at fifth position with TR of 13,991,000, followed by Malayalam daily Malayala Manorama with TR of 12,589,000. Marathi daily Sakal is in seventh position with a TR of 11,377,000; Tamil daily Dinamalar is placed eighth with a TR of 10,040,000. Marathi daily Punya Nagari (TR 9,943,000) and Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi (TR 9,444,000) are in the ninth and tenth positions, respectively.

Saras Salil leads among the top 10 Hindi magazines with a total readership of 7,365,000, followed by India Today (Hindi) with a TR of 5,456,000; Griha Shobha is in third position with TR of 5,359,000. Meri Saheli is placed fourth with TR of 4,945,000; Cricket Samrat, fifth with TR of 4,419,000; Pratiyogita Darpan, sixth with TR of 4,259,000. Grehlakshmi is in seventh position with a TR of 3,983,000, while Champak is in eighth position with TR of 3,416,000. Sarita is placed ninth with TR of 3,030,000 and Nirogdham is placed tenth with a TR of 2,946,000.

Among the top 10 English magazines, India Today maintains its leadership position with a total readership of 5,823,000. Readers Digest follows in second place with TR of 3,942,000. General Knowledge Today is placed third with TR of 3192000; Competition Success Review, fourth with TR of 2,567,000; Filmfare, fifth with TR of 2,213,000. Wisdom is in the sixth position with a TR of 1,933,000; Stardust is placed seventh with TR of 1,750,000; Outlook, eighth with TR of 1,558,000; Diamond Cricket Today, ninth with TR of 1,272,000; and Business Today, the sole business magazine in the list, is placed tenth with a TR of 1,091,000.
