IPOY 2009: 12 nominees shortlisted; winner to be revealed on December 17, 2009

Hectic preparations are on for the fifth edition of ‘impact Person of the Year 2009’, an annual initiative of ‘impact’, a leading weekly on media, advertising and marketing from the exchange4media Group. Twelve nominees have been shortlisted this year, based on industry votes and nominations. The winner would be announced at a grand ceremony in Mumbai on December 17, 2009.

As in the previous year, Nielsen has come in as research partner for this year as well. In keeping with the philosophy of the property – which is, a poll of, by and for industry practitioners across media, advertising and marketing – the list of nominees has been suggested by industry practitioners themselves.

Among the media buying and planning fraternity, Madison World’s Sam Balsara finds a place in the prestigious list. GroupM’s Vikram Sakhuja, too, features in the list of nominees.

From among media owners, the heads of most large media houses are among the nominees. They include Essel/Zee Group’s Subhash Chandra, Sun Network’s Kalanidhi Maran, BCCL’s Samir and Vineet Jain, Network18’s Haresh Chawla, HT Media’s Rajiv Verma and UTV’s Ronnie Screwvala.

The other important personalities nominated include Harit Nagpal of Vodafone, Colors CEO Rajesh Kamat, and STAR India’s Uday Shankar.

IPL Chief Lalit Modi was the recipient of the impact Person of the Year Award for 2008 for his outstanding and impactful Indian Premier League, while Network18’s Raghav Bahl was the ‘impact Person of the Year 2008’ (Editorial Choice).

In 2007, Dr Vijay Mallya, Chairman of the UB Group and Kingfisher Airlines, was declared ‘impact Person of the Year’. In 2006, CNN-IBN’s Rajdeep Sardesai was felicitated with this Award. impact Person of the Year Award was set up in the year 2005. Peter Mukerjea, then with Star India, was the first recipient of this Award.

This year, a mailer was sent out by impact and research partner Nielsen, asking industry players to suggest names of people whom they thought deserved the honour. This led to the shortlist of 12 nominees. Nielsen is now reaching out to a cross-section of media/ advertising/ marketing industry people asking them to select their impact Person of the Year.

It may be noted that no one from the exchange4media Group has any role or say in the final selection of the impact Person of the Year. This is an Award decided solely by the industry.
