IPL’s Delhi Daredevils get Akshay Kumar’s brand power

Cricket and Bollywood are getting delightfully blended thanks to the IPL and ICL initiatives. So far, IPL has had some high powered Bollywood involvement in the form of Shak Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, among others. Now, GMR Sports has roped in Akshay Kumar as Brand Ambassador for the Delhi Daredevils team for the upcoming DLF Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament.

This was announced at a press meet in the capital on March 31. The team’s website was also unveiled at the event. The website has been developed by Arc Worldwide, while Leo Burnett is the advertising agency handling the account.

Hero Honda is the main sponsor of the Delhi Daredevils, while Kingfisher and Religare are the associate sponsors. Adidas will sponsor the team uniforms.

Speaking on the occasion, Srinivas Bommidala, Chairman, GMR Sports, said, “The GMR Group has a very close relationship with Delhi. We are in the process of gifting Delhi a world class airport. Now, with Delhi Daredevils, we want to make Delhi a world class city for sport and take Indian sports to a new level.”

Commenting on roping in Akshay as brand ambassador, Yogesh Shetty, CEO, GMR Sports, said, “Akshay Kumar’s personality exactly matches that of team Delhi Daredevils. We are privileged to have him as the first fan of the team.”

Said the actor, “I am a firm believer of sportsmanship. My heart beats for Delhi. I consider myself a pucca Dilliwallah. I would like to thank the GMR Group for letting me become the first fan of Delhi Daredevils.”

Speaking about the website, CVS Sharma, Senior Vice President and Director, Arc Worldwide, said, “Aggressive search and mobile marketing directed huge number of fans to the website for the web cast. Within three hours of the launch we had 3,000 fan registrations.”

Samir Gangahar, Executive Director, Leo Burnett, said, “We are delighted to be GMR’s communication partner for the Delhi Daredevils franchise and to work with them in achieving their vision of making it a community brand. Creating a professional sports team franchise is practically a new category in our country and GMR has given us the opportunity to be a part of this journey from its very inception.”

The Delhi Daredevils is a young team comprising the resurgent Virender Sehwag (Captain), Gautam Gambhir, Manoj Tiwary, Mohammad Asif, Daniel Vettori, Dinesh Karthik, Shoaib Malik, Glenn McGrath, Abraham de Villiers, Tillekratne Dilshan, Farveez Maharoof, Amit Misra, Pradeep Sangwan, Brett Geeves, Rajat Bhatia, Shikhar Dhawan, Yo Mahesh, Mithun Manhas, and Mayank Tehlan, while Greg Shepperd is the team coach.
