Gunter Thielen, Chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann AG, will be honoured with the Media Person of the Year Award at this year’s Cannes Festival. The award is in recognition of Thielen’s leadership of Bertelsmann AG, an international media corporation which occupies top positions in all its core markets – TV, books, music, magazines, media clubs and media services.
“We are delighted to honour Gunter Thielen, who as head of Bertelsmann, has shown so impressively how business excellence can go hand in hand with social responsibility. By reviving the media company’s decentralised corporate culture of partnership, he unleashed enormous creative potential and set the scene for innovation and growth,” said Terry Savage, Executive Chairman of the Festival.
Commenting on the award, Thielen said, “I feel deeply honoured to receive this prestigious award, and accept it on behalf all the talented entrepreneurs who have made possible Bertelsmann’s global success. They are the ones who truly deserve this award.”
Dr Gunter Thielen has been Chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann AG in Gütersloh, Germany since August 2002. Under his leadership, the company has significantly increased its profitability. Bertelsmann, which was founded in 1835, has operations in 63 countries and 88,516 employees worldwide. Revenues for 2005 amounted to €18 billion.
As Chairman and CEO of Bertelsmann, Thielen initially set a consolidation course to streamline the company for profitability and to revitalise the core businesses according to the principles of decentralised management. In 2004, Thielen launched a group-wide growth and innovation initiative, which has since yielded numerous new business ideas and an expansion to new markets. This initiative and systematic acquisitions have helped Bertelsmann to grow its revenues and profits powerfully in recent years.
The trophy will be presented to Thielen during the Media Lions, Outdoor and Radio Lions Awards Ceremony, on June 20, which will take place in the Palais des Festivals at Cannes.
