‘Lock kar diya jaaye?’ For a generation that synchronized its dinner and homework to catch KBC, quiz mania (although not of the Kaun Banega Crorepati variety) is back. A host of three-member teams are to battle it out on January 9 2004 in the ‘Advertising and Marketing Quiz’ organized by the Delhi Advertising Club. Being held at The Connaught after a two-year gap, it’s expected to be an evening where the recall power of the advertising and marketing fraternity will undergo a severe test. A mix of participants, executives at different hierarchical levels will be seen rubbing shoulders with the ‘achievers’ and the ‘whiz kids’.
Explaining the fundamentals of the quiz, R.C. Tanwar, President, Delhi Advertising Club tells exchange4media, “Participants include the advertising and marketing body, which broadly encompasses corporates, ad agencies, their clients, media planners and the media. The incentive is Rs. 15,000 for the winning team, Rs. 9,000 for the runners-up and Rs. 6,000 for the second runners-up.”
But how does the ‘Advertising and Marketing Quiz’ fare in comparison with the Economic Times’ Brand Equity Quiz, popularly dubbed as ‘corporate quizzing’s final frontier?’ “Ours is a niche quiz targeted at the advertising and marketing fraternity,” defends Tanwar. Thirty teams are expected to participate in the quiz. It’s not a freebie, though. Each team pays a registration fee of Rs. 3,000 and members of the audience too pay Rs. 300 per head.
The quiz not withstanding, it has been a dull period for the ad club. “Although the quiz has been a continuous presence on the club’s annual itinerary over the last six-seven years, it has not been held for two years. This is perhaps because the new bodies were not that keen on hosting the quiz, they did not have the time to do so.”
Sunil Gupta, who has anchored several programmes on advertising and marketing, and is actively involved with theater, is the quizmaster. Ex-JWT, Gupta has remained Executive Vice President & General Manager, HTA (Mumbai) before making the switch to R.K. Swamy/ BBDO as COO.
So, come January 9 2004, all roads lead to the ‘Advertising and Marketing Quiz’.
