A filler featuring screen-blazer Rajinikant may have drawn the largest round of applause at SPARK 2005, the Chennai AD Club's Annual Awards ceremony, but the real superstar turned out to be Chennai-based 1pointsize, which emerged agency of the year.
Amid socialising in the aisles and an overload of Mirchi, 1-point size emerged the clear winner with 205 points. Mudra South emerged runner-up with 105 points, while JWT Bangalore with 90 points, Linterland with 70, and RMG David with 65 points completed the top-5 list.
In a recorded video message, the Chairman of the jury, Pushpinder Singh, Creative Director, Ambience Publicis, appealed to the marketing community present to carry back the spirit of enthusiasm from the awards night when judging ideas. On the criticism to advertising awards in general, he said, "A lot has been said of late. My only submission to the ever-growing tribe of critics is that when other elements of the marketing mix aren't working, the Ad Club Awards are a way of measuring the creativity quotient."
1pointsize's tally included Golds in categories including Copywriter of the year, Art Director of the Year, Brand Building, Calendar, Photography, and Typography. The agency also won three Golds in the POP category. While Lowe stayed away from the awards this year too, Saint Gobain won awards including a Gold in the TVC category (more than 30 seconds) and Silver for Brand Building.
In the Radio category, there were 59 entries and Rediffusion DYR and Radio Mirchi won a Silver each. There were 810 entries this year against the 712 last year. Understandably, the Convenor of SPARK 2005 and Senior Brand Services Director, Lowe, Chennai, Vijay K Xavier, was a busy man. Speaking to exchange4media, he said, "A lot of new agencies were in the fray this year, with agencies including RMG having entered the awards for the first time. It was nice to see a smaller agency win a lot of awards and it proves that size doesn't matter, quality does,"
Sharad Haksar from the Chennai-based 1pointsize, which won 12 Awards at SPARK last year (including 5 Golds), was elated. He said, "We've been doing good work for the last three years on Perri Alley. We're happy that it has finally been recognized. It was also nice that we won the copywriter and art director awards, which we missed winning last year."
Last year's agency of the year was JWT, Bangalore, and the runner up was JWT, Chennai. Lowe and O&M stayed away from the awards this year too.
