Cannes to honor Viacom CEO Redstone as the Media Person of the Year

Sumner Redstone was named the Media Person of the Year, at the Cannes Lions 2002. The award, which honors a leading personality from the worldwide media industry, would be given in recognition of Redstone''s success in establishing Viacom as one of the world''s premier entertainment and media companies. The trophy will be presented to Redstone during the Press, Outdoor and Media Lions Awards Ceremony, on Tuesday 18 June 2002.

Redstone''s career in media began in 1954 when he joined National Amusements, a chain of local drive-in film theatres in the U.S. He was appointed CEO in 1967 and Chairman in 1986. After National Amusements acquired a controlling interest in Viacom in June 1987, Redstone went on to become the CEO of Viacom and since then Viacom has become a leading global and diversified media company.

Viacom owns two U.S. broadcast networks, CBS and UPN and manages a total of nine cable programming services, including the global youth brand MTV and children''s network Nickelodeon, which have a presence in India also. Viacom''s properties also include Viacom Outdoor, Paramount Pictures, Paramount Television, Paramount Parks, TNN: The National Network, Simon & Schuster amongst others.

The International Advertising Festival this time, also announced the Outdoor Grand Prix award, which would aim at a more aggressive promotion of the outdoor advertising medium.

The International Advertising Festival -- Cannes Lions -- is the largest gathering of worldwide marketing and advertising professionals, as well as the most prestigious advertising awards. Each year, about 9,000 delegates from the advertising and allied industries attend this event to celebrate the creme de la creme of creativity in all major media, discuss industry issues and network with one another. Over 17,000 ads from all over the world are showcased at the Festival, and the winning companies receive the highly coveted Lion awards. The 49th International Advertising Festival was held from 16 to 22 June 2002 in Cannes, France.
