Bhaskar Group acquires Saurashtra Samachar for Rs 7 crore

The Bhaskar Group has bought out the Gujarati daily, Saurashtra Samachar, the leading newspaper of the Saurashtra region. Girish Agarwal, Director, Marketing, Dainik Bhaskar, said the deal was struck at Rs 7 crore.

Said Agarwal about the acquisition, “Divya Bhaskar is the leader in Ahmedabad and Surat. Now, on September 11, we are launching our edition in Baroda. So we thought that in order to give a complete package to our readers and advertisers, another brand under the Bhaskar Group will be a big advantage. With this acquisition, Divya Bhaskar will be able to offer the complete Gujarat to its advertisers.”

The Baroda edition Divya Bhaskar will have an initial print run of 2.5 lakh copies. The overall circulation of the paper in Gujarat will be 11 lakh copies, the highest by a Gujarati newspaper.

Agarwal ruled out any change at the editorial level as a result of the management change. “The basic style and content will remain the same. Pratap Bhai Shah will continue as the editor of Saurashtra Samachar,” he said. “However, we plan to increase the number of pages and also improve the layout and printing.”
