ASCI upheld complaints against 134 out of 183 advertisements in July 2016

In July 2016, ASCI’s Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) upheld complaints against 134 out of 183 advertisements. Out of 134 advertisements against which complaints were upheld, 44 belonged to the Healthcare category, 44 to the Education category, followed by 24 in the Food & Beverages category, 8 in Personal Care Category and 14 advertisements from other categories.

Under the Healthcare category, the CCC found the claims of more than 40 health care products and services to be either misleading or false or not adequately/ scientifically substantiated and hence violating ASCI’s Code. Some of the health care products or services advertisements also contravened provisions of the Drug & Magic Remedies Act and Chapter 1.1 and III.4 of the ASCI Code. Complaints against the advertisements of American Instrument, Japani Instrument, Nurture Healthcare (Ayurex-S Vitality Capsules), Nurture Health Care (Ayurex NDX), Bgainer Capsule, DS Research Centre, SBS Biotech Unit II(More Power Capsules), CELL Gen Anti- Ageing Centre, Rahat Herbal Care, Endura Mass, Jambola Liquid,  Deltas PanchaTulasi Drops and several others were upheld.

In the Food & Beverages category the ads of Bonn Nutrients Pvt. Ltd. (Bonn Nu Health Bread), Sonia Honey, KamlaPasand Pan Masala, Saloni Edible Oil, Royal Bee Slim Honey, Sunpure Sunflower Oil, Aava Natural Mineral Water, Gemini Cooking Oil, Green Life Pharma (Stevita) and others were found to violate the ASCI CCC’s guidelines.

The Personal Care category had ads of Himalaya Neem Facewash, Gillette Vector, Axe Deodorants, Sensodyne Toothpaste, X-Men Instant Fairness Cream, Nature’s Sun Ban Sunscreen Lotion & Cream and other brands being deemed exaggeratory or making false claims.

The Education category too found ads of Guru Nanak Institute of Management, Dhruva College of Management, Byju’s Classes, Allen Career Institute, IMS Engineering College, ICA Infotech  (ICA Industrial Accountant), Haldia Institute of Technology, Apeejay Education Society (Apeejay Institute of MassCommunication), Brilliant Computer Education, Aptech Limited (Arena Animation) and several others to be making false claims.

Other categories also listed Mahindra Supro Maxi Truck and Mahindra Maxximo Plus, Fena Washing Powder, Airtel and Tata Docomo as showing misleading ads.
