All eyes on Balsara-Sakhuja partnership

Vikram Sakhuja is quite the man of the moment, generating quite a buzz for the new role he has donned.  Sakhuja is set to join the Madison Media Group including OOH as Partner and Group CEO. He will be responsible for the Media and OOH business of Madison World and will work closely with Sam Balsara. Prior to this, Sakhuja was head of Global Strategy for GroupM.

“I am truly excited at the prospect of returning home to India and in an entrepreneurial capacity. It is also a privilege to now partner a person who initiated me into media in my client days. Media has never been more exciting, and I look forward to further strengthening an already iconic agency brand,” said Sakhuja in a press statement, on the announcement of his homecoming.

“Vikram will focus on here and now of our clients’ businesses and their future growth strategies that can be impacted by media,” says Madison World Chairman & MD Sam Balsara as he talks about Sakhuja joining Madison World as Equity Partner said speaking about agency approach and expansion plans with the strength of Sakhuja coming on board.

The industry is abuzz with rumours about blue- chip accounts moving to Madison since Vikram Sakhuja known to have very strong client relationships.

Balsara however says, “No. We have always been selective about new business and will continue to be so. But wait for Vikram to join and then ask him, too. His world view will count more than mine. Remember now we have a partner!”

The announcement of Sakhuja joining Sam Balsara’s highly respected homegrown agency Madison Media is being touted as a positive step for both the agency and Sakhuja.

How the partnership pans out and what it would mean for the agency and its competitors will be interesting. All eyes are now on the new partnership between Sam Balsara and Vikram Sakhuja who have known each other for over two decades and have distinctive styles of leadership.

We take a look at Sakhuja’s interesting journey that has led him here.

An alumnus of IIT Delhi and IIM Calcutta, Sakhuja has nearly three decades of industry experience across his various avatars as advertiser, broadcaster,  and agency head.

He started his journey as a management trainee at DCM ltd and honed his marketing skills with Procter & Gamble India as Associate Manager Media  (1988 to 1996). He further went on to work with Coca-Cola India as Marketing Manager (1996 to 2000).

Sakhuja is credited with country's first Media Agency of Record (AOR), and has also successfully launched  brands like Diet Coke, Whisper, Ariel and Sprite.

He joined Star as EVP Marketing in 2000; before beginning his journey with GroupM as MD Mindshare in 2002, and then donned the role of CEO, GroupM South Asia.

Sakhuja created history in 2013, when he was appointed Global CEO Maxus, as  an Indian official being appointed a Global CEO whilst being based in India,  was a first.

In 2014, Sakhuja was head of Global Strategy for GroupM.
