Is Ram Sewak Sharma the favourite to take over as new TRAI chief?

Rahul Khullar, the current Chairman of TRAI, steps down today after three years in office and the government is wasting no time in hunting for a replacement.

A telecom observer who did not wish to be named said that Ram Sewak Sharma, current IT secretary, is the favourite to take over the reins at TRAI due to his proximity with Minister for Telecommunication and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad. A career bureaucrat, Sharma was one of the top men under Nandan Nilekani on the Aadhaar project. As the current IT secretary, he is responsible for spearheading Digital India initiatives. He is a post graduate in Mathematics and was appointed Secretary of IT last year.

A report in the Economic Times today claimed that a shortlist of 7 candidates has been created, which includes Sharma, Information & Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka, Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher, Defence Secretary RK Mathur, Steel Secretary Rakesh Singh and former Telecom Secretary MF Farooqui.

Rahul Khullar was Commerce Secretary before taking over as TRAI chief.
