National Geographic to air Heroes for the Planet on Diwali

National Geographic will telecast Heroes for the Planet: A Tribute to National Geographic at seven p.m. on 16 November. The one- hour event was staged on 7 Jan 2001 at the Warner Theatre, US, with debonair actor Pierce Brosnan playing host.

The event was held to pay tribute to the channel which is available in several countries as well as to celebrate the launch of the National Geographic Channel in America. The new channel is a partnership between National Geographic Television and Fox Cable Networks Group. The channel claims that it reaches 28 million homes.

The show began with an introduction by charismatic ex-President Clinton praising the National Geographic Society for its 113-year commitment to conservation and the environment. 7 January was marked in Washington as 'National Geographic Channel Day'.

The show also recognised the contributions explorers and researchers have made to the Society. They include Jane Goodall, who extensively studied chimpanzees and the late Diane Fossey, who dedicated her life to the study of mountain gorillas. Fossey was played on-screen by Sigourney Weaver in the film 'Gorillas In The Mist'.

Underwater explorer Bob Ballard who uncovered the secrets of the Titanic and anthropologist and botanical explorer Wade Davis will also be acknowledged.
