BPL restructuring its Internet operations

In a major restructuring of its Internet operations, BPL Innovision has carved out a new company merging its broadband and Internet divisions, appointed new CEOs and is in talks with France Telecom to jointly fund the new venture. The new venture will be called, BPL Internetworks Ltd. The merger of the two divisions will ensure that customers would get a more holistic offering from BPL.

Henceforth, bplnet.com will be a subsidiary of BPL Internetworks Ltd which will also look at acquiring regional Internet service providers to expand its customer base.

The new company was looking at creating both bandwidth and Internet infrastructure in the south-western part of the country for which it had the right of way and would soon be networking the region. The company would lay ducts between Mumbai and Pune, and was debating the establishment of a link between Bangalore and Pune.

BPL Internetworks is most likely to see investment from its existing foreign partner France Telecom to fund its expansion plans.

At the time of the launch of bplnet.com, in April last year, BPL had announced that around $60 million would be spent towards Internet infrastructure. Most of the funding had been generated through internal resources and around $15 million has been earmarked for investing in e-services or vortals. bplnet's services include, total customisable Internet solutions like access and messaging solutions, hosting and co-location services, managed enterprise networks, Internet solutions and application services.
