When Ogilvy India had stated that they would not participate at the Abby Awards 2009, and McCann Erickson, too, said that their participation was tentative, the Abby Awards, and the GoaFest 2009 per se, appeared to have lost some sheen.
GoaFest 2009 Chairman, and CEO JWT India, Colvyn Harris, however, has been saying that while slowdown is a reality, GoaFest is an industry effort. He had said, “Being a part of the industry, everyone should participate in the event, which is India’s only shot at having its own advertising festival.” It would appear that the industry has heard Harris and reciprocated as well.
After Ogilvy promising its participation, McCann Erickson, too, has said that it would send in “limited” number of entries for the Abby Awards 2009 as an industry gesture. McCann Erickson’s Prasoon Joshi said, “This has been a tough year for advertising agencies, and so we would be sending a very limited number of entries, but we would like to be a part of this as industry members.”
Harris is delighted and is, in fact, expecting more from the industry. Speaking to exchange4media, he said, “Lowe Lintas, too, is participating at the GoaFest. We are waiting to hear from them whether they would participate in the Awards as well. We are very happy that this year the Awards would see total industry participation.”
Does the fact that the two agencies – Ogilvy and McCann – have said that they would be very selective in the number of agencies they are sending be any kind of a dampener? Harris replied, “People would be sending their best works. That is what awards are about.”
We owe it to the industry to participate in GoaFest: Colvyn Harris
