Nokia, Idea jointly push for mobile Internet adoption

As a part of its strategy to connect the next billion to the Internet, Nokia India has entered into a strategic partnership with Idea Cellular that will make the Nokia Store and Nokia Music service easily accessible to millions of Idea Cellular consumers. The partnership will allow Idea Cellular consumers using Nokia phones to get the best Indian and global premium content from Nokia Store and Nokia Music and pay for it via their pre-paid or post-paid accounts. The service will go live by the end of this week.

Nokia and Idea plan to leverage the Internet experience offered by Nokia phones powered by Idea 2G and 3G data connections to further the adoption of the mobile Internet in India and open up significant additional monetisation opportunities for Indian and global app developers, music labels and publishers.

Speaking on the partnership, Viral Oza, Director - Marketing, Nokia India, said, “This partnership democratises access to the best local and global content by making it available across both Nokia smartphone and feature phones with affordable pricing and a seamless payment experience. We believe integrated operator billing is very relevant for a market like India where penetration of alternate billing mechanisms is limited.”

Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer, Idea Cellular, added here, “Music and entertainment is at the core of Idea’s marketing strategy to promote value added services, brand communication, and building customer connect, which has resulted in rapid growth in data usage on our network. Our initiative with Nokia will enable affordable and easy access to music and entertainment based apps on the Nokia platform in the remote parts of the country, where Internet is only accessible on mobile.”
