Jhalak Dikhla Jaa finds new home in Colors

Colors is set to telecast the biggest dance show format, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. This is the third, non-fiction show that has moved from Sony to Colors, after Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi and Bigg Boss, both in the year 2008.

Commenting on winning the rights of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, Raj Nayak, CEO, Colors said, “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa – Dancing with the Stars is one of the most successful entertainment formats on Indian television and we are happy to collaborate with BBC Worldwide Productions. We have always wanted to showcase a dance show and what better than to acquire the biggest dance format show in the world.”

Looking at the trend of the three shows that moved from Sony to Colors, as per TAM Media Research data for CNS 4+ HSM (Hindi Speaking Metros), Fear Factor India Season 1 in the year 2006, aired on Sony, had maintained an average TVR of 3. When the show shifted to Colors, it was named Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi and garnered ratings of 2.5 TVR. For the second season, the show saw a TVR of 3.3.

Sony launched Bigg Boss in the year 2006. In its first season, the reality show got a TVR of 2.1. The move to Colors in 2008 didn’t see any significant increase in the show’s rating, which stood at 2.2 TVR in Season 1. In the second season, the ratings improved a bit to reach 2.6 TVR and further rose to 3.4 TVR for the third season.

Both Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi and Bigg Boss garnered better ratings after the shift to Colors.

Sony has a strong fiction line-up and has time and again clearly stated that 80 per cent of the focus would be on fiction and only 20 per cent on non-fiction. Jhalak Dikhla Jaa would be one show that won’t be making it to that share of 20 per cent.

In addition to this show, Colors is also looking at the show’s advertisers shifting from Sony as Jhalak Dikhla Jaa got its highest ratings of 3.2 TVR in the last season.
