WPP has been recognised as the Holding Company of the Year by judges at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2011. This is the first company to receive this new award.
WPP accumulated 1,219 points in the competition, with Omnicom second with 1,152 points and Publicis third with 744 points.
In a prepared statement, Sir Martin Sorrell, Chief Executive, WPP, said, “On Saturday in Cannes, WPP was awarded a Lion as the number one holding company in the industry by a considerable margin. This is the first time that the award has been made. We are proud of this industry-leading achievement. Thanks to all our clients and to every one of the 146,000 WPP people for making this happen. Congratulations to the people of WPP and our family of companies on this great achievement.”
A wide range of WPP companies won awards at the 2011 Festival and their numbers were used to calculate the points that resulted in WPP, the world’s largest communications services company, being recognised at Cannes as the premier Holding Company of the Year.
Contributions were made groupwide – not only from Ogilvy, JWT, Y&R and Grey, but from Bates 141, Senora Rushmore, Santo, Monday, TAXI, LDV United, CHI & Partners, Campaign Palace, Johannes Leonardo, Scholz & Friends, Ikon Communications, Mindshare, MEC, Mediacom, Maxus, Burson-Marsteller, Hill & Knowlton, Landor, The Partners and Possible Worldwide.
Awards were won from more than 30 countries across all the continents, including the Grand Prix awarded to JWT Shanghai, the first time a Chinese agency has ever won this top prize.
