Cannes Lions 2011: India surpasses 2010 haul; wins 20 Lions

There are still three more days to go, and Indian agencies have already beaten last year’s metal tally at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. With the winners in Press and Design jury announced on June 22, 2011, India has won a total of 20 Lions in 2011. These include two Golds, 10 Silvers and eight Bronze Lions.

Last year, India agencies had seen a drop from an otherwise aggressive growing curve when India won 17 Lions only. In the previous year, Indian agencies had cornered 25 Lions and in 2008, India had 23 Lions, including a Grand Prix. At 20 Lions, India’s 2011 tally is already better than last year, and close, at least in numbers to 2008 tally.

The four categories yet to be announced are Film Lions, Film Craft Lions, Creative Effective Lions and the Titanium & Integrated Lions.

At present, Mudra Communications is leading the India scorecard at 36 points. The agency has won three Silvers, four Bronze Lions and nine shortlists. Most of Mudra wins are for the agency’s work Silent Anthem. In a conversation with exchange4media, Bobby Pawar, CCO, Mudra Communications maintained, “It is great to win, especially at Cannes, and we would have liked to win more. As far as we are concerned, I will say this again, we have done the work and it is out. Now we are waiting to see where it takes us.”

BBDO follows at 20 points with two Silvers, one Bronze Lion and seven shortlists.

McCann Worldgroup, given its recent wins leading to one Silver Lion, one Bronze Lion and three shortlists has jumped up the ladder to a clear number three position.

Lodestar UM and TapRoot India tie the number four position with Out of the Box, which has won India its second Gold this year.

With one Silver ad one shortlist Ogilvy & Mather India is on the number seven position with six points.

Maxus and TBWA\India follow.

Agencies such as JWT India, Publicis agencies and Leo Burnett India have not scored at Cannes Lions at all this year, yet. With four more categories to go, one is still hopeful of what would be heard from these prominent agencies.
