Abheek Barman, Senior Editor at NDTV Profit, has put in his papers after a three-year stint. According to sources close to the development, he is joining the proposed ET (Economic Times) business channel from Times Global Broadcasting Co Ltd that runs the Times Now channel. The sources aver that Barman will head the channel as Consulting Editor.
When contacted, Times Global CEO Chintamani Rao declined to make any comment or divulge the name of the channel.
Times Global Broadcasting recently broke off with its partner Reuters, which had a 26 per cent stake in the JV with Bennett, Coleman & Co Ltd. It is now a fully owned operation of BCCL.
Rahul Joshi, Executive Editor, The Economic Times, will also have a leadership role in setting up the ET business channel’s content and format along with Barman, it is learnt. Further details are not available as yet. The channel is reportedly looking at a launch in the last quarter of this year.
Barman, a product of Presidency College, Kolkata, and Delhi School of Economics, began his journalistic career at Business Standard as a feature writer in 1993. Thereafter, he moved to The Economic Times, where he was an edit writer, columnist and analyst on economic issues. He then moved to The Times of India, where he had held various senior editorial positions, including that of Edit Page Editor. In 2004-05, he was Editor-Special Projects, in which capacity he led the TOI’s Parliamentary election coverage.
